An online waste management system that closely tracks the discharge, transport and treatment of waste was the topic of a training seminar held on October 9

Hosted by National Administration of Environment, the seminar was attended by staff from the central and southern provinces’ natural resources and environment departments.

Nguyen Hoa Binh, director of the administration’s Waste Management and Environment Improvement Department, said the country had generated an average of 130,000 tonnes of solid waste annually since 2004.

The new online system, which includes a database with information from businesses that register with the department, is designed to reduce paperwork, save money and curb abuse among companies that discharge, treat or transport waste.

Regulations require that companies register with the department and submit detailed information on the kind and amount of waste being discharged, treated or transported.

Information about pickup and delivery sites, vehicles used, drivers’ names and licence numbers, among other data, are required.

Registered companies are allowed to pay online their monthly environmental fees, a government-mandated charge required of many companies in Viet Nam.

All stakeholders involved with the registered companies have access to the e-waste system with a secured password.

The system, which was developed by the National Administration of Environment’s specialists, was based on those used in the US, Japan and South Korea.

Nguyen Thanh Nien, the system’s main developer, said it was expected to cut the time needed for transactions between the departments and businesses by 40-60 per cent.
