The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on November 14 inaugurated the Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) station in Quang Nam province.

The Quang Nam DGPS station is the first of its kind in central Vietnam. It is installed with a GPM MSK receiver that receives signals 24/24 from the US satellite system, a signal transmitting system and an outdoor antenna system covering 700km of radius.

This station was built at a cost of 12 billion dong ($670,000) over three years. According to Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Manh Hien, this station will assist the development of the sea economy, natural resource control and mapping for the central region.

The station will also be useful for search and rescue activities on the sea.

Besides some DGPS stations of the Defence Ministry, the MoNRE has built four stations in Dien Bien, Hai Phong, Vung Tau and now Quang Nam.
