UNESCO on November 5 awarded the Kalinga scientific awards 2009 to three individuals and organizations including professor Trinh Xuan Thuan, at the world scientific forum in Budapest, Hungary.

Vietnamese American professor wins UNESCO award

The award for Prof. Thuan is to honor his discovery of the youngest planet in the galaxy in 2004 and for writing over 200 articles and books about astronomy, including one on the Big Bang.

Indian professor Yash Pal was honored for his participation in many TV shows to spread scientific knowledge. He also contributed to the establishment of an astronomy centre and an educational information centre in India.

The UNESCO award for water supply for dry areas was granted to Dr. Bellachheb Chahbani from Tunisia.

The Sultan Qaboos award for environmental protection went to the Spanish National Park Management Agency (OAPN).

UNESCO presenting these awards to honor the efforts of individuals and organisations in promoting scientific development in the world.
