The Forest Protection Agency in Thua Thien – Hue city has discovered a rare pheasant – Lophura Ewadsi – listed in the IUCN Red List Category.

A railwayman saw a strange “chicken” crowned by a white comb in a cage near the Hai Van Pass tunnel and reported it to local forest rangers. They immediately took the “chicken” to North Hai Van Nature Reserve.

The animal was identified as a very rare pheasant, Lophura Ewadsi. According to a Danang wildlife research organization, this species of lophura was believed to be extinct.

Around 70 years ago, Jean Delacour, a Frenchman, located a Lophura Ewadsi in Bach Ma National Park, but this species has not been seen since then. In Vietnam, only the central provinces of Quang Tri and Thua Thien – Hue have lophura.

The Thua Thien – Hue Forest Protection Agency has contacted the Hanoi-based National Zoo to preserve this endangered species.
