The Institute for Environment and Natural Resources has completed the evaluation of pollution in the Thi Vai River, including Vedan Vietnam’s discharge of untreated waste water to the river.
Dong Nai: Foreign-invested firm killing Thi Vai River
According to the institute, the river has received nearly 94,000cu.m of water from industrial zones in the provinces of Dong Nai and Ba Ria – Vung Tau. Around 7km of the river is polluted.
The research reveals that concentrations of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO) and NNH3 in the water exceed permitted levels. The water cannot be used for irrigation.
The General Department of Environment will make public the evaluation in December. Based on this research, local authorities will define the responsibility of companies which caused the pollution and losses suffered by local farmers.
