VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnam is among 11 countries that suffer the most from climate change. Foreign reporters recorded Vietnamese ways to adapt themselves to climate change.

HCM City is the largest city in Vietnam. The city is below sea level so it is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change the sea rise level and severe weather. The situation is similar in the Mekong River Delta.

Over 75,000ha in area, the Can Gio mangrove forest helps prevent landslides, erosion and plays the role of a green lung.

Some areas in the Mekong Delta lack the protection of mangrove forests. These areas are vulnerable to the sea level rise and sea water encroachment. Sea dikes have been built to prevent the infiltration of salty water.

The Mekong Delta is the rice basket of Vietnam and it accounts for 90 percent of Vietnams rice export. Farmers begin to change their crops and grow new rice varieties to adapt with climate change.

Ms Tran Thi Hong from Long Dinh village said that rice growing is getting difficult because farmers cannot forecast the weather.

Many people deal with unexpected water rise by building houses on stilts.

Houses and tombs are easily attacked by floods. Tombs are often built on high mounds but tombs in fields cant survive after floods.

If floods continue to rise, more and more people will have to leave afloat. In Can Tho, floating markets are very popular.

But in HCM City, the major vehicle of over 7 million people are motorbikes. Vietnam is contributing to climate change.
