Fifteen environmental protection projects have been short-listed in Toyota Viet Nam (TMV)’s Green Ideas contest, organisers announced yesterday in Ha Noi.

Development of an eco-garden in the northwestern region was one of the short-listed projects by Nguyen Hung Cuong. The author hopes to achieve three goals by creating an area for ethnic groups to cultivate. First, he would evaluate how ethnic groups deal with a polluted environment. Second, he would look into how they preserve valuable plants, and finally, he would use the experience to determine how to create an ideal environment for study and research of environmental issues.

“The result of the project would be a green and healthy ‘lung’ for the region to promote environmental awareness among the community,” said Cuong.

A project using garlic to kill pests designed by Lai Thi Bich Phuong from HCM City was also chosen as a finalist.

Phuong said her grandmother doesn’t like to use insecticides in her vegetable garden because she is afraid they will pollute her land and lead to cooking poisoning, polluted ground, water and air. She works very hard to kill pests without harmful pesticides.

“My grandmother inspired me to think of an alternative, and I realised garlic could kill pests. The method costs less but is very easy,” said Phuong.

Thanks to her idea, most household vegetable gardens in her Lu Gia Ward of HCM City’s District 11 are productive without the use of insecticides.

Tran Tuan Minh from Ha Noi’s Dong Da District developed an eco-user project. Minh’s idea is to develop a website that can find solutions to shared environmental issues.

Website members, including organisations and individuals, could post questions about environmental issues on the site. For example, if a family needs to clean its storage area in an environmentally clean way, they could ask for suggestions on the website. If a company wants to build a waste network, or if the Government launches a bid to dredge Hoan Kiem (Returned Sword) Lake, the announcements could be posted on the website.

All posted issues would be settled by the website’s green solution called “VEN”. Each environmental issue would be discussed and analysed among users to find suitable solutions.

“I expect VEN to become a big provider of information related to environmental issues,” said Minh, adding that the project needs more Government and donor funding to become a reality.

Final round

The final round of the contest will be held on April 25 in Ha Noi. The three most feasible projects will be chosen as the winners.

Each project will receive VND250 million (US$13,000) from TMV to start off, said Phan Hong Hai from TMV.

The contest is jointly organised by TMV, the Ministry of Education and Training and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
