A yellow butterfly with wing span of 24cm is now kept by a family in Duc Linh district, the central province of Binh Thuan.
A HCM City’s resident To Quang Vinh was very surprised to see such a big butterfly at his mother-in-law’s home in Binh Thuan. He immediately called VietNamNet to share the discovery.
Vinh told VietNamNet that his mother-in-law caught this butterfly one year ago. It is now preserved as a dry specimen.
“I read on the Internet about a Chinese man who caught a giant butterfly with a wing span of 23cm. I measured this butterfly, and it has swing spread of up to 24cm,” Vinh said.
Vinh’s mother-in-law, Mrs. Tam, told LookAtVietnam that she saw this butterfly on an apricot tree in her garden over one year ago.
Some scientists told VietNamNet that this is an Attacus Atlas butterfly, belonging to Saturniidae family. This is the largest butterfly species in the world, and is incredibly rare. It is listed as endangered species in Vietnam.
The Attacus Atlas butterfly can be found in Vietnam, China, India and some other Southeast Asian countries.
