The Vietnam International Telecommunication Conference 2010 opened in Hanoi on May 19 to promote broadband connections in Vietnam.
VN sets its sights on dominating Cambodia’s telecom market
The conference, entitled “Realizing the Broadband Connection Society in Vietnam”, took place on May 19-20 to discuss plans on developing broadband services, as well as technological solutions and content services for the 3G network.
The event attracted more than 200 government officials, plus domestic and foreign telecom company representatives and international advisors. This is the second time Vietnam has hosted the international telecom conference.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister of Telecommunication and Communication Le Nam Thang asserted that the Government always gives priority to telecom development to serve economic and social development and also to make Vietnam an attractive destination for the world’s leading telecom and IT groups.
According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Vietnam has the highest telecommunication growth rate in the world.
By April 2010, the country had 140.3 million phone subscribers, including 87.2 percent of mobile subscribers, and 23.6 million Internet users, accounting for 26.6 percent of the population, including 3.19 million of broad-band Internet subscribers.
Vietnam aims to have 70 percent of the population using mobile phones by 2015 and all families to have phones by 2011; 20-30 percent of households to have computers and Internet connection and over 90 percent of families to have TV sets by 2015.
