Mobile phone users increase as fixed-line accounts decline

The number of mobile phone subscribers continued to rise in the first four months of this year while the number of new fixed telephone subscribers saw . . . decrease.
Official data showed that total subscribers grew to 143.8 million, 56.2 per cent more than the same period last year, comprising 19.9 million fixed and 123.9 million mobile phone subscribers. Meanwhile, new subscribers in the first four months totalled 13.4 million, of which mobile subscribers accounted for 12.6 million, up 31.3 per cent on last year, while fixed subscribers accounted for 815,000, up 27.3 per cent. Local telecom provider Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) increased their customer base to 71.3 million over this period. The group’s customers include 11.6 million fixed and 69.7 million mobile telephone subscribers. Also in the first four months, broadband subscribers reached 3.2 million, 35.6 per cent higher than the same period last year, with the VNPT accounting for 2.3 million. According to the figures, total revenue for post and telecommunications services in the first four months saw a year-on-year increase of 42.6 per cent to VND35.2 trillion (US$1.9 billion), of which the VNPT accounted for VND23.9 trillion ($1.3 billion).
