Three projects of four Vietnamese students will take part in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair - the world’s largest pre-college science fair competition - in the US on May 9-14.
Tran Kim Thanh Vu and Dinh Thi Thu Ha, two 11th graders from the Da Tel High School in Lam Dong province, will present their idea entitled “Treating Organic waste by Fermentation Combined with Breeding Worms.” This project aims to improve the habit of collecting and treating rubbish from families and to change people’s awareness, particularly students, of environmental protection.
Also from Lam Dong province, Doan Thi Xuan Phuong, a 11th grader from the Duc Trong High School, will go to the US with her project named “Using Toads to Kill Pests.” This project deals with problems associated with cooking safety in Vietnam, where most agricultural produce contain high pesticide residues.
Nguyen Van Ha Uy, a 12th grader from the Le Quy Don High School for Gifted Students in Da Nang, is interested in new methods to serve scientific research. Uy will introduce his method to measure the gap between two points in space while the measurers don’t have to move. If this project is successful, it would be very useful for astronomers in measuring distances between two objects in the universe.
Each year, more than 6 million young scientists from around the world vie to attend and 1,500 are selected as finalists to share ideas, showcase cutting-edge science and compete for over $4 million in awards and scholarships of Intel ISEF. To judge the projects, more than 1,000 science, engineering, and industry professionals volunteer at the Intel ISEF.
The competition is for students from the 9th to 12th grades.
