Fossil teeth of straight-tusked elephants (Palaeoloxodon naumanni) that became extinct about 10,000 years ago, have been discovered in the northern province of Lao Cai. That was one of preliminary estimation on fossil items excavated at Ma Tuyen Cave in Muong Khuong District. The estimation was organized by Lao Cai Province Museum, Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Hanoi-based Institute of Archaeology on June 11. The elephant teeth are among 504 fossil items that archeologists have found from 12 animal communities, which lived ten of thousands of years ago. Seventy percent of the excavated items are teeth of bears and rhinos, and toe bones of deer, said Associate Professor Dr Nguyen Lan Cuong, deputy general secretary of the Vietnam Archaeology Association.
