Doctors from Hospital 103 and Army Medical Institute performed a heart transplant surgery for a man who suffered from last-stage heart failure June 17, using the heart donated by a dead brain person.
The patient is Bui Van Nam, 48, from the northern province of Nam Dinh. Nam has been suffering from last-stage heart failure for four years.
The operation took place within two hours and just one day later, the patient recovered. This is the first heart transplant operation in Vietnam.
The operation was carried out under the assistance of experts from Taiwanese hospital Cheng Hsin.
The Army Medical Institute is the first hospital in Vietnam that performed kidney and liver transplant operations in Vietnam in 1992 and 2004. The institute has conducted experimental heart transplants since August 2005.
The first heart transplant was conducted successfully in the world in 1967 and has been regarded as an effective procedure to help patients with end-stage heart failure and severe coronary artery disease live longer.
