Mobile networks race to rake in teen subscribers

Last week VinaPhone announced its teen entertainment service on mobile phones, which includes teen-targeted games and media. This service allows teenage subscribers to download music, ringtones, pictures, video clips or play games.
This firm also launched a program to seek teen representatives for its cell phone game called “Pet”.
A VinaPhone representative remarked that the telecom market is now at a saturation stage. Telecom networks are trying to gather up the last customers, mainly concentrating on teens.
In June, Viettel introduced several competitions and services for teenagers with special bonuses and also exempted charges for Pixshare service users (mainly teens) in June. Pixshare users are encouraged to upload their pictures and video clips for a competition to receive attractive gifts. According to Viettel, nearly 56,000 pictures were uploaded in June, including 12,500 by teens.
Besides charge packs designed for teens like Q-teen and Q-student, MobiFone has launched many services and forums for teens, which allow them to play games, download ringtones, share feelings and sponsor activities.
MobiFone’s Charge and Marketing Department Chief Dinh Viet Hung noted that the age of 15-18 group are an important potential client base. They will soon become university students or workers and they are also the ones who will set new trends of consumption.
“If we go abreast with customers when they have nothing and offer them unconditional preferences, they will stay with us,” Hung asserted.
The policy to invest in young customers has grown since mid-2009. Smaller networks like Beeline and Vietnamobile have also targeted teen users.
Since its establishment, Beeline has introduced super-cheap charge packs for low-income earners, including students. Vietnamobile changed its logo, using an orange color, and issued preferential policies for young customers.
According to statistics, the total number of phone subscribers in Vietnam has exceeded 120 million, much higher than Vietnam’s population, and the mobile market has become saturated. However, the real number of users is much lower and there are around 20 million people without mobile service yet.
“Attracting teen consumers will be the fiercest war in the coming time,” predicated a VinaPhone representative.
