Bridge - The nation’s universities and colleges have stepped up IT departments
over the past decade, but the quality of training is still limited due to
educators’ inadequate foreign language abilities and professional knowledge,
says Quach Tuan Ngoc, director of the Department of Information Technology of
the Ministry of Education and Training.

After
finishing from university IT programmes, students must still take part in professional
training courses and pass examinations to receive IT certifications from such
software companies as Microsoft, Oracle and Cisco before meeting their
employment requirements, Ngoc noted.

Domestic
universities trained at a common level and based on general theory, agreed a
former deputy minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Mai Liem Truc.

The
universities failed to focus on the specific requirements of enterprises, and
students took too much time to accommodate to the work after graduating, said
Nguyen Ngoc Long, assistant dean of Ton Duc Thang University in HCM City.

Most
employers reported that graduates took three to six months to gain new skills
before employers could assign them to regular duties, Long said.

For
instance, the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) has trained
about 5,000 employees and expected to spend about VND500 billion (US$25
million) on human resources training over the next 5-10 years.

Some
companies hesitated to invest in Viet Nam because of the poor human resource
quality, said the chairman of a foreign-invested technology corporation who
asked to remain unnamed.

The
general director of domestic software giant FPT, Truong Gia Binh, said member enterprises
of the Viet Nam Software Association should invest directly in human resources
training.

Universities
are drawing on the State budget to increase training quality and help students
improve their skills.

“Universities
and colleges have recognised the working requirements of society, software and
telecommunications companies. They will train students according to those
requirments to meet demand,” said Ngoc.
