IT experts on Monday warned Vietnamese businesses and organizations of more attacks by foreign hackers on their websites because the level of Internet security in the country was low.

A conference on internet security held in Hanoi heard that low security was a common feature among Vietnamese websites, from those belonging to state offices and agencies to IT companies.

The meeting was convened in the wake of massive attacks on around 1,500 Vietnamese websites by foreign hackers since early this month.

Representatives of the CMC Information Security Joint Stock Company (CMC InfoSec) said the websites were so poorly equipped that average-skilled hackers could easily find the source code and get access to the content publishing section.

The companies and organizations were not aware of the importance of internet security when they designed their websites, the CMC reps said.

“It is like they have left the door open for hackers,” said Trieu Tran Duc, general director of CMC InfoSec.

According to BKIS Internet Security Center, an estimated 200 websites ending in “.vn” were disrupted in the first half of this month.

On June 2 alone, a total 200 Vietnamese websites were attacked overnight by a group of hackers who called themselves CmTr.

Experts said hackers have found more and more ways to attack Vietnamese websites, but not many security measures have been taken by the companies and agencies.

Vu Quoc Thanh, deputy chairman of Vietnam Information Security Association, said the information security sector lacked qualified people.

On the other hand, a number of Vietnamese companies and agencies were still reluctant to share information so they do not want to hire information security workers to protect their websites, he said.
