The land plots in the Can Gio District in the suburbs of HCM City are being hunted by investors, who plan to make a “double investment”. They hope the land price would increase, thus bringing fat profit to them, and for the time being, they will breed salanganes to sell.

With the bird’s nest market price now at 1500-2000 dollar per kilo, if succeeding with the salangane breeding, the investor will have a high income of billions of dong a month. That explains why many investors now plan to inject money in the land plots in the Can Gio district, which is believed to have the ecosystem suitable to the salangane breeding.

Meanwhile, having realized the high demand from investors, many families in the Can Gio District, are joining forces with the companies that provide salangane breeding technology to offer to sell landed property here.

Having purchased two land plots with the total area of 4000 square meters in Tam Thon Hiep Commune in the Can Gio District, Pham Sinh, a Viet Kieu (overseas Vietnamese) in Australia, representing an investment group from Sydney, said he has to pay 2.2-2.6 million dong per square meters. This means that the land alone costs him 10 billion dong.

“With the favorable ecosystem, we plan to breed salanganes here,” Sinh said, when he was asked why he bought the land.

According to Sinh, land is now cheap in the Can Gio district, selling at several hundreds of thousands of dong per square metrer. However, he decided to buy the two land plots in the commune because there is a forest nearby. The land plots are located near the sea and next to a river, while the climate here proves to be very suitable to salanganes.

“I have learned about the models of breeding salanganes in different places. Many people succeed with their breeding in the inner city, therefore, I believe that Can Gio is the right place to invest in,” Sinh said.

Nguyen Thi Lien, who lives in District 10 in HCM City, and her relatives have purchased three land plots with the total areas of 3000 square meters in Tam Thon Hiep Commune, worth 7 billion dong in total. At first, Lien planned to buy two land plots only, but she has later changed her mind.

Lien said that if she wants, she can build villas on the land plots. However, in the immediate time, she will build houses to keep salanganes, believing that this would be a kind of profitable business.

Ngo Van Ha, a Viet Kieu in the US, has also bought two land plots in the commune, said: “I go back and forth between Vietnam and the US, but I still have decided to inject money in land, because I am going to spend my old age here”.

Ha said he only buys one thing – land, but there will be two things which can bring profits to him – land price and salangange breeding.

Pham Trong Duc, a senior official of the Can Gio district’s authorities, on April 29 affirmed that many investors are seeking to purchase land in the district after they could see with their eyes that many families have succeeded with salangane breeding.

According to Duc, there are 17 households in the commune which have registered the salangane breeding. Also, there are nearly 100 households who breed salanganes spontaneously. They asked for the permission from the local authorities to build houses to live, but the households have been breeding salanganes inside their houses.

Duc said he has successfully persuaded nine salangane breeding households to open their business model for the district’s surveying. One of the households reportedly collects 30 kilos of bird’s nests a month, earning 1.2 billion dong.

Salanganes have been bred in a trial basis in the locality for two years, when the impacts on the environment and other problems will be recorded before the local district proposes the city’s authorities to expand the area for breeding salanganes.
